Why Buy the Ercol Windsor Sideboard?
The Windsor Sideboard from Ercol Furniture is a beautiful and practical example of mid-century modern British design. This authentic Ercol sideboard was manufactured in 1978. Crafted from elm and finished in Ercol blonde, this sideboard is in fantastic condition. Moreover, the Windsor range itself is central to the history of Ercol furniture.
Ercol Windsor Range
First created during the Second World War, the Windsor kitchen chair was part of Ercol’s support for Britain’s war effort. Tasked to create functional, robust furniture in light of wartime shortages, Ercol created the Windsor chair. In so doing, the company perfected industrial processes for steam-bending wood, which allowed for efficient large scale production. With this early success, Ercol expanded the Windsor range throughout the 1950s – 1980s. Authentic Windsor range pieces can be identified in a number of ways. Firstly, labels. Several different styles of labels have been used over the decades. However, you are likely to find blue or gold metallic paper labels, depending on the date of manufacture. Secondly, wood. Ercol used two kinds of wood during the mid-century period. On the one hand, beech was used for table and sideboard legs and for chairs. On the other hand, elm is used in tabletops, sideboards and solid seats. While beech is a light wood with a flecked grain, elm is a bit darker with a swirly pattern to the grain.
