Why Buy John Chipperfield Pottery?
John Chipperfield is a founding member of the Suffolk Craft Society. Formed in 1970, the Suffolk Craft Society continues its mission to promote the value and importance of contemporary crafts. Similarly, The Society aims to support individual craftspeople, and currently works with 90 craftspeople. Best known for its annual Aldeburgh exhibition, The Society has endured since the mid-century. Indeed, a 40th anniversary exhibition in 2010 highlighted John’s ceramic and glasswork.
John Chipperfield remembers that he sometimes felt that aesthetically and philosophically he was not in tune with some of the other early members of the Society. For the first exhibition at Snape Maltings he chose a white background and brought in spotlights to display his ceramics when most of the other exhibits were politely understated and the prevailing colour was beige. As a result, one member refused to speak to him for a year.
Chipperfield, focusses on vessels made of ceramic and glass. His work often features asymmetric forms and bold coloured glazes. On the one hand, his kiln-formed or cast glass pieces contain bold, geometric designs in subtle colours. On the other hand, John uses ceramic asymmetrical jug forms and shallow dishes as canvases for dramatic and colourfully glazed surfaces. This Picasso-style comport is a good representation of classic John Chipperfield pottery. In practice, it is stunning left unadorned. However, it also makes a great centrepiece on a dining table or can be used as a fruit bowl! The key point is, John Chipperfield is an icon of modern British decorative arts. His work is unique, functional and recognisable.
